Star Wars: Review

Sunday 09.08.2002

I loved the first three Star Wars movies, I saw them a zillion times at the theatre, I bought the video tapes, but these next three, the prequels, I go mainly to see the backstory, ya know? I mean, we know how this whole story turns out, right? The evil empire is defeated and the roguish pirate wins the princess and the long-lost father repents and saves his son. So the rest is just backstory, how did the father go bad, how did the evil emperor come into power and so on. Kind of hard to get real excited about that.

The first of the prequels was a kid movie, like watching a really long video game. And the idea that that child would end up marrying the adult looking queen was a bit much. I was more interested in seeing Obi-Wan and Amidala get together!

The second prequel was a bit more interesting, Haydn Christianson looks hot in black leather! And Ewan's not bad with a beard and the whole romance of Anakin and Amidala was more believable in this movie since he's all grown up (although she hasn't aged a day. :)). They tied up some lose ends of how their kids end up with their respective guardians and showed how Anakin begins to turn towards the dark side. The intrigue in this one was more intriguing, a bit more involved and I liked the whole adventure of Anakin and Amidala getting into trouble, reminiscent of Luke, Han and Leia in the first movie (of course, that was intentional on the director's part, I'm sure).

And I'll go see the third prequel when it comes out but it's still all backstory...

I think my sister is mostly right and but misses a pretty important point. The first three Chapters 4 through 6 were groundbreaking in special effects and money making. They had a magical quality to them. There is just no way anyone no matter how talented can duplicate that kind of once in a lifetime magic. Anything compared to the first three movies is going to be a let down. The expectations are way to high. Nonetheless I have watched the first two movies and have walked away disappointed each time. I liked the second better then first but I would still rate them distant relatives of the first three. I love the back story and connecting the dots but at this point its the only reason to go see it.

Star Wars: Review and Spider-Man note

Friday 05.24.2002

There was alot to like about this movie. I loved seeing how storm troopers were invented. The creation of the death star plans. How the republic was corrupted into the evil empire. The relationship between Anakin and Amadala. Heck even seeing Yoda kick some butt was kind of cool. Still I can't put my finger on it but there was something missing, some intangible, the other movies had. Maybe it's the fact that there's no suspense in it, we all know how it turns out or maybe it was just too slow in developing or maybe it was the switching back and forth. This movie just lacked something. Lucas seems to have lost the orginal vision that made Star Wars once so great and indestructible. Overall I rank this one higher then Chapter 1 or Chapter 6 but it just wasn't as good as it could have been. Final grade for this movie is a light green.

Addendum not related to the above review I also dragged my sister to see Spider Man despite her saying she wouldn't like it. So I bet her the price of her ticket. Well one day she is going to learn to never bet me on things because as usual she lost. Scoreboard for me so far this year is Me 3 Her 0. Good thing we only bet dollars and movie admissions. Not only that she also agreed that X-Men was a pretty good movie too. Dang, next thing I know she will go with me for Daredevil and Incredible Hulk. Well, those might be pushing it but hey you never know. I didn't think they could make a good X-Men or Spider man movie.

[alice replies] Yeah, but X-Men has Hugh Jackman! I'll watch him read the phone book for two hours...

[reply to the reply] Not entirely true because you said you wouldn't see this movie even with him in it at one point at which point I said you were missing a good movie...hmmm turns out I wasn't all that wrong now was I. Boy it's fun to be in the right !!!

[alicettlg adds]

Daredevil, that's the one with Ben Affleck, right? Nope, not a chance, I'm am so sick of him, and I never thought he was that good of an actor to begin with. These days, he's a Celebrity with a capital C, a name in the news and making headlines, not just for dating J-Lo but for his Greenlight series and Push, Nevada and just general junk.

Can't stand him!
