Murder by Numbers: Review & Panic Room: Review

Saturday 05.04.2002

I figured I would get my two cents on these movies now. First, let's start with the greater of two evils, Murder by the Numbers. OH MY GOD, this movie was HOOORRRRRIBBBBLLLEE. Could Sandra Bullock's character get more whiney? Don't get me wrong, I like Sandra, think shes a fine actor in all respects BUT GET SOMEONE TO PICK SCRIPTS FOR HER or at least stop asking Kevin Costner to pick her scripts. This movie was boring, predictable and one of the worst written movies ever. What happened to girls kick ass? This one should be subtitled Whiney Cop saves the day. My verdict 1/2 star out of 5 stars. Sandra good, everything else bad, very bad.

Panic Room, what to say about this. Jody Foster, superior actor. Forrest Whittaker, superior actor. Dwight Yoakum, scary dude (why girls find him hot is always mystery he's ugly and neurotic and just plain weird). Those three should have made for a decent movie but the plot was weak, they did the best they could with what little they had but come on? How exciting is it to be locked in a room? Cool house, although REALLY FREAKING BIG. Why do two peoople need such a huge house? And what is up with all the damn doors? Is it just me or does the daughter look like a boy? I think on the last point, I am showing my age. Note to self, I want a refrig in my room damn it!!! This movie was average all the way around, a better plot line would have helped this movie but not sure what they could have done except scrap the panic room. My rating: 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars.

Murder by Numbers: Review & Panic Room: Review

Friday 04.26.2002

Tuesday was my brother's birthday so we went to see a double feature.

Murder by Numbers was so-so, if they'd made the homosexual subtext more text than sub, it would have been a bit more interesting. I like Sandra Bullock and she was pretty good in this, although the subplot about her was very predictable, I figured it out in the first 10 minutes, so then it was just waiting for them to get around to revealing it to the other characters. Ben Chaplin...is he related to Charlie Chaplin? oops, no, he's not, although he sure does look like him. But anyway, Ben Chaplin is good and Ryan Gosling, too, he's perfect as the spoiled rich kid who always gets by.

Panic Room! Wow, much better than Murder by Numbers and even tho the plot is pretty thin, the suspense is good, had me on the edge of my seat and grabbing my brother's arm and talking to the screen (good thing there weren't many other people in the theatre ). It's all due to David Fincher who knows how to direct a movie, he did Seven and Fight Club, really terrific movies with complex plots. While this plot is lighter and just about completely revealed in the previews, he still manages to keep it suspenseful and not overly predictable. And I'm glad Nicole Kidman had to drop out, much as I like her, the marriage subplot (hubby dumped wife for younger woman he worked with) bears too much resemblance to events in Nicole's life at the time it was filmed and I think Jodie Foster gave a grittier, more realistic performance than Nicole would have, besides she'd just done a mother-protecting-sick-children-in-peril movie (The Others).

David Fincher does most of his movies in this kind of monotonal color scheme, Seven was all golden, Fight Club was bluish and Panic Room is greenish, Alien 3 was sort of grayish brownish. I like the effect, he lets in enough color so it's not really black and white but puts a tint over it all which sets a mood that enhances the movie. There's rumors that he's in talks to direct Mission: Impossible 3 for Tom Cruise which I think would be great, a dramatic change from the lush color of John Woo's M:I2. Plus given Fincher's record of psychologically traumatizing the main characters in his movies (Alien 3, Seven, Fight Club, Panic Room), this could mean that M:I3 will be darker and more traumatic for Ethan Hunt.
