House of Sand and Fog: Review

Monday 11.01.2004

A wrenchingly beautiful film, cinematically beautiful in the scenes and acted beautifully by an excellent cast, Ben Kingsley, of course, but also Jennifer Connelly, Ron Eldard and Shohreh Aghdashloo. It starts slowly, carefully building each character with small things, mail on the floor, dishes in the sink, a doorman's look, a silver coffee table. In both Behrani and Kathy, there is a sense that they are trying to bring back the past, but it's gone like the fog on the beach. In the end, I wanted both of them to win even tho I knew it wasn't possible.
