Day After Tomorrow: Review

Thursday 06.10.2004

I loved it! I thought it was a great movie for its genre, disaster movies or what I call rollercoaster rides, up there with Twister, Independence Day and Deep Impact. I laughed in parts of it and the cgi effects were really very good. The only somewhat bad parts were near the beginning - excuse me but no helicopter pilot who wants to live would go up when there's multiple twisters around! and the twister cgi wasn't that great but that's a pretty tough thing to recreate realistically in cgi.

The snow and water scenes in New York were very well done and I liked the kids, Sam with his crush on the pretty girl on the academic team and the good looking rich boy who figures he can steal the girl easily but he turns out to be a fairly decent guy later - I was really surprised that Sam's friend or the rich guy didn't end up dead, I figured they were red shirts for sure but it was kind of nice that they didn't go the expected way of killing them off.

The flash freezing stuff was cool too and they had just enough computer stuff, graphics of the storms and stuff to keep it interesting. And it didn't matter that the science is extremely implausible, it's a fun rollercoaster ride and Dennis Quaid does a good job with it. Sela Ward was the only one who really bugged me, she seriously overplayed her part but fortunately there's very little of her in it. And Jake Gyllenhaal was good - but doesn't he look alot like Toby McGuire? Same sort of bug eyes, pale skin, plain brown hair and he does the same sort of shy awkward guy thing. And Ian Holm as the scientist stuck up in northern Scotland was terrific plus his two assistants, a nice little side plot.

So I loved it and my brother hated it - sorry about that, Matt!

Day After Tomorrow: Review

Wednesday 06.09.2004

Well they didn't anything I didn't expect. For example make a worthwhile disaster film. Disaster films are the worst film genre there is. Took me awhile to figure this out but now with advent of CGI it is about 100x worse. You want plot? Nope don't got that. You want acting? Nope none of that here either. This is just porn is all it is. CGI Porn plain and simple. Seriously think Jenna Jamison could out act most of the people in these films. Not to mention hiring the Debbie Does Dallas scriptwriter might IMPROVE the dialogue in these films. So basically if you want to see the cow go flying by and that gives you thrills you will love this movie. If your like me and think they could actually do something with this genre more then this garbage they put up you will hate it. Probably the worst thing though about this movie is that they had to put these wolves in there to go chase after people and they couldn't even make a decent CGI wolf. Other then that yes the CGIs were great wee look a the twisters take Hollywood sign off. Wee look at the frozen Statue of Liberty. Wee look at the lame ass lines and horrible acting of Dennis and Jake. Jake by the way is a poor man's version of Toby Maguire. He tries so hard to channel Toby but he just isn't Toby. Toby can act you are overrated. Ok wasted enough time on this waste of a film but on the bright side it wasn't as bad as Van Helsing.

Rating: Red. Need I really say more?
