Artificial Intelligence: AI: Review

Friday 05.10.2002

Hmm. Well, it was good. But it didn't really stir enough emotion in me to want to really say much. I think Spielberg tried too hard to be Kubrick and came away with something that is both emotionally sterile and too obviously trying to tug at our heartstrings (not to mention stealing a plot from Macaulay Culkin's movie, The Good Son). "Aww, look at the cute little boy, look how he just loves his mommy and she's been so mean to him and he still loves her." It's meant to raise a lot of questions about what love is, what responsibilities do we have to someone who loves us, what makes us real, orga, rather than mecha, but it just tries too hard. It's really pretty, the house they live in is gorgeous, the futuristic effects done well, just enough without looking too cold, actually I got more emotional about that house than I did the people in it. It's beautifully filmed, the water effects in NYC are really well done, the special effects for the half built/half destroyed robots are great, Jude Law is wonderful as the gigolo, Ben Kingsley has a great voice. All it's missing is a heart. If Spielberg had just done the movie with himself directing instead of trying to be Kubrick, it would have been better.
